Do you Hear Any Rumbling Down I-45?
Posted In: Events & Attractions | Galveston News Posted by James Brockway on 11/02/2012

Proclaimed as the “Largest 4 Day Motorcycle Rally in North America”, the Lone Star Rally is rumbling down I-45 on its way to Galveston Island over the November 1-4 weekend.  Estimates in the past have ranged upwards of 250,000 people crowding the island for this four day event.

To add to the  Mardi Gras-like festival, other entertainment includes Bret Michaels live on stage Friday night.   The younger generation remembers Bret Michaels for his appearance on The Apprentice, but those of us that are a wee bit older remember him from the iconic hair band Poison.

Charlie Hunnam “Jax” of the hit TV show “Sons of Anarchy” will also make an appearance Friday night, in addition to his previously scheduled Saturday appearance, to sign autographs and hang out with fans.

For more information, follow this link http://www.lonestarrally.com/ or follow the tens of thousands of bikers rolling down I-45.

Farley Girls Cafe in Galveston, Texas
Post Office Street is the home to many great restaurants and the Farley Girls Cafe is the latest in East End dining choices.

Offering “a little bit of everything", sisters Rosmond Thormahlen and Ryanne Duzich are getting rave reviews. The sisters grew up in the industry and became well versed in restaurant concepts and management. Their parents created Island favorites, Fish Tales and Fisherman’s Wharf, which were later sold.

The "Mile High Meatloaf", "Shrimp Burger", pulled pork and bread pudding are some of the more popular menu items. The cafe also offers pizzas, panini sandwiches and salads, among other fare.

Farley Girls Cafe hours are 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located within walking distance of the University of Texas Medical Branch at 801 Post Office Street.

Diamond Beach Resort in Galveston
Diamond Beach, located at the western edge of Galveston Island's famous Seawall, launched a grand re-opening celebration last week and its efforts have been paying off.

International Bancshares Corporation took possession of Diamond Beach in June and at the time, 42 units were still available for sale. To help increase sales, the resort created a new identity by implementing a marketing strategy that focused on the the property's upgrades. Since then, nine units have been sold and interest in the property continues to grow.

If you are interested in learning more about Diamond Beach and the many amenities it has to offer, we would be happy to assist you in your property search. Please call Hudson Holmes at Brockway Realty, LLC at (409) 263-2020.

Mark Twain & The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston
Posted In: Events & Attractions | Galveston News Posted by Pam Moore on 09/16/2012

The other night I was watching a documentary on PBS about Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain. The documentary was a Ken Burns production and I learned many new things about this great American Author and Humorist.  Did you know that he almost committed suicide before he ever wrote his first novel?  Did you know he lived in Hawaii for a brief time?  The program I watched was part one, so I am looking forward to seeing part two!

Why do I mention Mark Twain?  Not merely because of the PBS broadcast, but because of a special event coming to The Grand 1894 Opera House, located in Galveston.

Actor Hal Holbrook will star in "Hal Holbrook - Mark Twain Tonight!"  on Saturday, April 13, 2013.  I have not purchased my tickets yet, but I am sure this show will sell out.  The Grand promotes this show with the following: "A living breathing American Masterpiece and one of the most acclaimed performances in history returns to the Grand!"  I did not see this program the first time it was scheduled at The Grand, so I feel the need to get my tickets now.  Hal Holbrook is a great actor, but he is also gaining years - who knows how much longer he will be able to travel and perform like this?

Count me in on watching part two of "Mark Twain" on PBS and getting my tickets to see Mark Twain being brought to life by Hal Holbrook.  Consider looking at the 2012-2013 Season offerings.  Maybe Liza Minnelli, William Shatner, "Lord of the Dance", "A Chorus Line" or The Texas Tenors will be of interest to you.  One trip to The Grand and I'll bet you will want to return!
