2016’s Best & Worst Cities for Texas Families Ranked by WalletHub
Posted In: Friendswood News | League City News | Pearland News | Texas City News Posted by Pam Moore on 07/14/2016

WalletHub has released a report containing a list of ratings of the 2016 Best and Worst Cities for Texas Families; excerpts from that report are shown below.

“Texas is one of the largest states in the country, both in terms of square mileage and population, which should be no surprise considering everything is supposed to be bigger there. That’s certainly true as far as the steaks, cowboy hats and football stadiums are concerned, but what about the homes, school systems, salaries and all of the other important factors that truly make life larger in a given place?” …

“In order to help Lone Star residents and those interested in joining the herd settle down in the right spot, WalletHub compared the 112 of the largest cities in Texas based on 21 relevant metrics that speak to their suitability for families of all types. This includes measures such as the number of playgrounds per capita, the violent crime rate and the divorce rate. Below, you can find the results as well as a detailed methodology and a Q&A with a panel of leading experts.”

The following Bay Area cities were ranked in the list of 112 cities:
#9 Pearland; #17 Friendswood; #19 League City; and #87 Texas City.

WallHub’s Methodology: To help identify the most family-friendly cities in Texas, WalletHub compared the state’s 112 largest cities in four categories: 1) Family Life & Fun, 2) Education, Health & Safety, 3) Affordability and 4) Socioeconomic Environment.”

We did so using 21 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was scored from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the most favorable conditions for families. We then used the weighted average of these individual-metric scores to calculate an overall score for each city, with which the cities were ultimately ranked.” …

WalletHub Sources:Data used to create these rankings were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Council for Community and Economic Research, SchoolDigger.com, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Education Agency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Renwood RealtyTrac and WalletHub research.

Pearland Police Department Establishes “Safe Exchange Zones” in the City
Posted In: Pearland News Posted by Pam Moore on 03/18/2016

Press Release ~ “The City of Pearland Police Department has initiated a new program called a Safe Exchange Zone. This initiative attempts to address safety and awareness concerns regarding internet-based purchases from websites such as Craigslist and EBay, as well as the various local Facebook groups, or any other item advertised for sale from an individual, regardless of the source of the advertised sale. While many websites, including those previously mentioned, are very credible and are heavily utilized, their popularity make them an easy target for criminal activity from online predators. The City of Pearland is now offering a secure location available for Pearland residents to help ensure and enhance their safety and to minimize the opportunity for an encounter to go wrong.

The Safe Exchange Zone initiative provides residents a safe area for prospective buyers and sellers to meet. The City of Pearland has designated a space in the public parking lot of the Public Safety Building located at 2555 Cullen Parkway, as a Safe Exchange Zone for any type of legitimate exchange residents need - which includes internet-based buyer and seller transactions. The Safe Exchange Zone location is located on the Municipal Court side of the building…”

“The City of Pearland Police Department works hard to establish and maintain positive interactions with the members of the Pearland community.”

Note: In Texas, Safe Exchange Zone Programs have also been established in: San Antonio, Dallas, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Denison, College Station, Abilene, and Brownsville. The program could also be considered for safe child custody transfers.

3 Bay Area Cities Rank in Top 15 Best Places for Young Families in Texas
Posted In: Friendswood News | League City News | Pearland News Posted by Pam Moore on 02/02/2016

NerdWallet released a new study in early October that lists the Best Places for Young Families in Texas. NerdWallet used the following factors for this study: public school excellence, home affordability, and growth and prosperity. Data was reviewed for 111 places in Texas; only cities with a population over 25,000 residents were analyzed.Three Bay Area cities were listed in the Top 15, showing that younger families are settling in smaller cities. Friendswood rated as #2; Pearland rated as #9; and League City rated as #11 on the study.

The following information is an excerpt from the NerdWallet study: “Our analysis revealed certain trends:
  • The highest-ranked places are suburbs. Seven of the top 10 places are within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, where the school districts outperformed schools in the rest of the state.
  • Long-term income growth stands out. All but one place in the top 10 had growth rates higher than the state average of 29.14% over the past decade. Not only are these suburbs excelling in education, they’re bringing in new wealth to the area — and quickly. The big driver of this growth, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, keeps the region soaring with support for 143,000 jobs and an economic contribution of $31 billion to the area every year.
  • School districts have more than good test scores. Academics are only part of the success of these cities’ schools. From new sports facilities to growing classroom programs, school districts are finding ways to expand the culture of learning.”
The full NerdWallet study can be found on their website.
